I do not believe that the left has made this to get breakdown. Any party, particularly one like CPM, which honestly stands on its own principles, will not accept to go blindly on such a deal with America, without even allowed to know the terms and conditions of the deal. I feel that left has done a right job, as someone from BJP said, it is not simply a Family matter of anyone that it should be kept secret It is a deal of the nation, not of any individual who supports it. So it must be disclosed. If not with each and every individual of the 110 Crore Indians, at least, it should be disclosed to those Left parties whom from it expects the support to the same.
One more thing is that, the American government has kept it in their website. Then what is the fun for our own government to hide it?
To decide whether the deal is good or bad is almost secondary. The primary is to know what that deal actually says.
Vijay, I dont think that UPA is not disclosing the details about the deal. Though I myself am not sure if there is any white paper or anything. There were few articles on this issue which goes into technical details. But there are valid concerns about future non-proliferation. IAEA would examine the civil nuclear reactors, just like what happened to Iran. Only then we can get nuclear fuel for our reactors for power generation. I agree that left parties are definitely clean parties and they are based on ideologies. But whether those ideologies are good or bad is another big topic. that we might want to discuss seperately.
My personal opinion is India at this stage needs nuclear energy to sustain growth and demand. I have posted many topics/replies in orkut communities, as to why I think so.
I saw in CNN, Prakash Karat showing the papers of deal and telling that the deal details are on the website of US. Even I want to see it and searching for that.
However, it is pretty clear from the ongoing discussions from past few months, that the Government is not ready to share the full set of terms and conditions of the deal, and discuss about it. The Govt has disclosed the fullest of the terms and conditions only in the end when the left has withdrawn the support, to blame the left as if they are not ready for the discussions. Even if we have to believe that there is nothing harmful to India in the deal, I do not find any valid reason that it should be kept secret to the Left parties.
For the sake of the country's long term benefits, Yes, we have to go for all the sources of Energy. There is no point in discussion about its validity. But "are we going to fulfill that need with this deal? Or are we going to be trapped into the US Self-centered traps, even without getting our need fulfilled?" is the question that is in my mind.
In case, if we are going to have a good deal with no biased conditions(which may even harm our sovereignty), We are fine. What is there in America then, we can even have such deals with any country in the World. But we first have to validate the deal in our country, inspect the deal thoroughly and then go ahead., which is not happening. That is what the chaos is about.
I read in a news paper that the cost of the nuclear plants will be in lakhs of crore rupees. Also,India should prove its loyalty, in the terms and conditions of the deal, and not only that, also to the satisfaction of the US President every year to continue the deal. Because the discriminatory power of the President of US will play a major role. And as all of us know, discriminatory powers are always there to make the selfish choices of bad people. And I dare not believe that US President can make decisions in favor on India.
The problem may come here, in case, for any reason ("Reasons" from America point of view may also include things like not supporting US in war with Iran ...etc), they can simply cancel the deal. And there may not be many providers of Uranium for India then. So huge amounts of investments which we spend for the sake of the infrastructure for the Nuclear power plants may go wasted.
We are also listening to the facts that even China is into a Similar deal with US. And many countries are willing to have. But I read that the Hide Act is not in the deal which China had with US. In that case, we can not compare with china and feel that our deal will also be safe for us.
What you say is very true. There is been hardly any discussion going on in media regarding the actual contents of the deal. I was under an assumption that the details of the deal was public. If it has been made public now, then it is definitely unpardonable. And it deserves no-support from Left. Left parties in many ways have been responsible for balance in capitalistic policies of successive governments I have a little bit of material recently.. that is the articles in the hindu paper. Though it is tough for everyone(including myself) to understand the technical details. I am planning to write a blog on this topic based on those articles. hopefully i can complete it.
The opinions posted on this blogspot is an individual's opinion. This might not accurately reflect on the stands taken by the Loksatta Party or Movement organizations
