Justifications: "Nuclear deal: Does Advantages of the deal outweigh the fears??"

The blog
http://loksattafocussed.blogspot.com/2008/07/nuclear-deal-does-advantages-of-deal.html
was on the basis of my previous article on the same subject
http://loksattafocussed.blogspot.com/2008/07/nuclear-deal-what-is-it-all-about-what.html

This is a huge subject with loads of possibilities.
My focus was basically on, whether this deal is worthy enough to go for confidence motion?
First and foremost, the deal is not discussed on its merits or demerits either in parliament or with the public.
This is not the way, it should have been done.
Having said that, If it really means to go for confidence motion without discussions, it is clear that Nuclear deal is a better option than without it.
My first blog(on the same subject), and many of my posts on orkut communities have been unbiased and more about putting both sides on the fore.
After my own research on the subject, I became pretty sure that it is a good deal for India.

Now
@rangadu's questions
1) Every type of resource has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The general impression is, if we go for the nuclear deal, the renewable sources are not considered.
I dont understand this logic.
Its synonymous to investing only in mutual funds and nothing on real estate or any other funds. The point is, nuclear deal and other options are not mutually exclusive.
I think nuclear energy is just one of the many sources of energy for future.
Infact I am a big fan of solar energy, We have solar lamps and solar water heater in my home since last 12 years in Bangalore!!(To point that I am not biased on "nuclear only", actions speak more than words!!)

2) Nuclear Reactors safety is one of the biggest concerns, and the technology to handle these concerns is also sophisticated.
India will get help on this issue from few of the NSG countries.
The second part,
I dont agree that western countries rely only on 10% for nuclear energy.
Please tell me the source of this info.
please see this link
http://www.nei.org/resourcesandstats/nuclear_statistics/worldstatistics/
France depends on it by 76.8 % and US itself is not even in top 10.
Also see this link for state wise nuclear energy generation in US
http://www.nei.org/resourcesandstats/nuclear_statistics/usnuclearpowerplants/

3) To get original text of the deal
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2007/aug/90050.htm
I agree that UPA should have discussed more about educating Indians.
Well we can equally blame both Communists(Left) and BJP(Right) for this.
Each one is sticking to its own prejudicial agendas and means
"Left" says all americans are cruel
BJP says its not a great deal, but was it a less deal to not to discuss on the house??
And Congress thinks, aam admi cant understand, so why bother teaching them!!
All second rated politics!!

@ Tarun,
There is no question that all the countries are looking forward to a major break through in optimally and realistically switch to renewable and green sources.
India needs to invest heavily in this sector, it is investing heavily too.
It is giving tax break for solar companies
http://www.eetindia.co.in/ART_8800471042_1800008_NT_5d3f4644.HTM
Over $7 Billion would be invested in hyderabad alone by solar companies..

Ok, Now for more info

Finally I would like to conclude with this link

Thanks aditya
The information was very useful.
We DEARLY need nuclear energy also to satisfy our energy needs.
But I found the questions raised by the Left parties in their press statement worth mentioning.( source The Hindu -resources)

Hope U would clarify those also.
Found this blog very useful.
Thanks

Thanks alot for your feedback.
Do you want me to focus specifically on the disadvantages of nuclear deal ?

As a starter i was not biased on the Nuclear deal because frankly I was not informed. We only hear pro and Con comments from people close to you (even though they do not know much about nuclear deal), because I think when it comes anything close to Nuclear Program or Nuclear test etc we have an emotional feeling attached to it. I still remember the day when we did the Nuclear tests in 1998 I was so proud. For a normal person if all we hear is US and INDIA are getting into some Nuclear deal which regulates the use of it, the first thing that comes to a mis/un-informed person is "why should US have anything to do with what we do with our Nuclear capacity?", but after reading your Blog and research Adi, its quite clear to me that we have to go ahead with this for our own good.
I think its time to fully harness the Nuclear capicity for our energy needs and I am sure that would be an uphill Task without support from Intrenational Community. Also, I think we are as good as we can be wrt the destructive use of the Nuclear energy, we did it to safegaurd our country from external threats(1998 Tests were supposed to be on Par with US) and now its time we get good at a more humane use of the same, something which will benefit the society.
Great Job Adi!!

As I said I am not for or against nuclear power and am still researching. But w.r.t the deal itself , the attitude of the govt. in not releasing all aspects of the agreement ( link ) raises more questions than it answers. My gut instinct says there is more to it than meets the
eye, and we all know the benefits of the deal to quite an extent, but may be we need to be looking
for chinks in the nuclear armor too. So I am in search of what the disadvantages could be.

As for nuclear power, I found an interesting debate which has perspectives from both sides
http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/print/128. This may be of interest to all who want to learn more on the issue.

When I said western world uses less than 10% of its electricity from nuclear sources, I was
referring to US - http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epa/epat2p1.html , ofcourse we have to include Europe too. Thanks for pointing out France's usage. I find that the story in Europe is somewhat more scattered - France (70%), Sweden (46%), Switzerland (40%), UK (18%), Russia (16%), Italy (no nuclear plants), Germany (26%).

I guess we both have started with an unbiased view, you have already decided that it is a good deal, while I am not yet convinced. Thanks for all the links. I will be writing up something on the renewable energy front, availability and feasibility and other issues and thanks for posting those links, those will help. Good luck.
